The Colosseum is an incredibly large amphitheatre built under emperor Vespasian in 72 A.D. Among the material used to build this unique piece of architecture it is worth mentioning travertine, tuff and brick-faced concrete. The Colosseum arena witnessed all sorts of events ranging from gladiatorial contests and public events to animal hunts and executions hosting thousands of people who gathered to enjoy the show.
The Colosseum is composed by the dungeons, the arena and the seating area: in the underground area there were all the animal cage and this area was directly connected to the arena or stage where all fights and shows took place; as for the seating area spectators were divided in three levels according to their social status.
At present, this iconic masterpiece presents some damages provoked over the years by earthquakes and stone-robbers, yet it remains the most popular attraction among tourists.
